Memory and Displacement in Three Communities

Lacy will discuss three relatively recent art collaborations in Charleston, South Carolina, Medellin, Colombia, and Elkhorn City Kentucky.  Born herself in a farm community in California's great central valley, until recently Lacy's work has been more about urban than rural issues. In 2000 she began, quite without awareness, to explore her own rural and working class heritage through a series of projects that explore memory, place and displacement.

These projects are:
The Borough Project (with Tumelo Mosaka, Theron Snipe, Rebecca Chandler and Catherine Braxton, in Spoleto USA’s Evoking History Project, curated by Mary Jane Jacob and Mosaka, Charleston, S.C. 2002)

Beneath Land and Water: A Project for Elkhorn City (with Susan Liebovitz Steinman, and Yutaka Kobayashi, a project sponsored by Appalshop and Creative Capital, Inc, Elkhorn City, Kentucky, 2000-2005)

La Piel del Memoria/The Skin of Memory (with Colombian anthropologist Pilar Riaño, Medellin, Colombia, 1999)
